Healthy Living Minister Theresa Oswald today announced details of community forums that will provide Manitobans with information about crystal meth.
"If your child, a family member or someone you care about is addicted to crystal meth, there are places you can go for help," said Oswald. "These forums will bring parents, community members and substance abuse experts together to discuss the issue and develop a better understanding about the issues surrounding crystal meth."
Presentations from experts will include information on:
what crystal meth is;
the dangers of the drug;
the current situation in Manitoba;
what parents, friends and teachers can do to help prevent drug use;
available addictions and mental-health services in Manitoba; and
what the Manitoba government is doing to address the use of crystal meth and other drugs.
People attending the forum will also have the opportunity to ask questions of panel experts.
Forums will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the following communities:
Winnipeg: North Kildonan Community Centre, Tuesday, Feb. 21;
Carman: Active Living Seniors Centre, Tuesday, March 14;
Thompson: R.D. Parker Collegiate Theatre, Thursday, March 16; and
Brandon: Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School, Thursday, April 6.
"Crystal meth is dangerous for individuals, but can also cause serious harm to families and communities," said Oswald. "As part of Manitoba’s plan to restrict supply and reduce demand for crystal meth, we are providing Manitobans with accurate and factual information about the risks of using this addictive drug and what they can do to prevent drug use."
To date, more than 21,000 booklets about crystal meth and other drugs have been distributed to Manitobans.
