Health Minister Tim Sale has introduced proposed amendments to the Medical Act which would provide support to the College of Physician and Surgeons of Manitoba in regulating physicians in the province.
"The Medical Act has not been substantially amended for a number of years," said Sale. "These amendments to the act will assist in the exchange of information between Manitoba Health and the college and improve administration of the act."
The amendments include changes which would:
improve patient safety by providing liability protection for a physician who reports to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba that another member is unfit to practise, incompetent or unethical;
update the professional discipline process including provisions allowing disciplinary action to be taken against a physician in Manitoba where he or she is also registered in another jurisdiction and has been disciplined there; and
improve accountability by requiring the college to submit an annual report to the minister of health.
"After consultations with representatives of the College of Physician and Surgeons and other health professionals, we are pleased to be able to introduce amendments that will enhance public confidence in our health system," said Sale.
