Education, Citizenship and Youth Minister Peter Bjornson today introduced the new Celebration of Excellence in Teaching Awards to recognize the work of Manitoba’s outstanding teachers whose exemplary contributions enhance student learning and achievement.
“It is fitting to introduce these new awards on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day. Teachers have a major influence on children’s day-to-day lives and, along with parents and families, help to shape the young Manitobans who represent our future,” Bjornson said. “I encourage parents, colleagues and administrators to nominate teachers who have had a significant influence on the lives of students.”
Awards will be presented to three teachers in the Teacher Excellence Award category, one from the early-years level, one from the middle-years level and one from the senior-years level. One Manitoba teacher will also be recognized in the Outstanding New Teacher category.
“In recognition of how important it is for educators and others in education to work together, there will also be an award given to a team of up to three teachers,” Bjornson said. “Members of the public are also welcome to nominate individual teachers or teams to be recognized for their hard work, commitment and dedication to the profession.”
Award winners will receive certificates of recognition and two cash awards, one of which is to be used for school projects or to purchase equipment. The deadline for nominations is Dec. 15.
Education International and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) first proclaimed World Teachers’ Day in 1994. Oct. 5 was chosen as the date to acknowledge adoption of a 1966 recommendation concerning the status of teachers in which international governments recognized their importance to society.
