– – –Salamanders, Chimney Swifts and Saw-whet Owls Focus of Over $127,000 in Grants
ST. LEON—The province will provide over $127,500 in grants through the Sustainable Development Innovations Fund (SDIF), Conservation Minister Stan Struthers announced here today.
“The projects funded in this round of grants include an educational program to preserve the salamander and its habitat,” said Struthers. “Managing our environment to protect sensitive ecosystems is enhanced by a greater public awareness of the unique aspects of Manitoba’s environment.”
The fund will support the Centre d’interprétation de la salamandre inc. with a $25,000 grant for interpretative and educational programming at St. Leon’s tourism centre. It will highlight St. Leon’s unique environmental features that include the tiger salamander and its wetlands, and the wind energy farm. In addition, a tourism and marketing plan to promote the area will also be developed.
SDIF supports a diverse range of projects, from research studies and demonstrations of new technology to community enhancement and environmental awareness. Other targeted funding programs under the SDIF are the:
· Waste Reduction and Pollution Prevention Fund;
· Environmental Youth Corps;
· Manitoba Climate Change Action Fund; and
· Water Stewardship Fund.
