Unit to Help with Large-scale, Technical Emergencies: Allan
A new Winnipeg-based mobile command support unit will ensure the Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) can provide faster response and support to the city of Winnipeg and surrounding areas for fire, police and other emergencies, Labour and Immigration Minster Nancy Allan, minister responsible for the OFC, announced today.

“The unit will assist police agencies with search and rescue efforts, provide support during illicit drug operations and provide a mobile command post when the Office of the Fire Commissioner implements the incident command system at emergencies,” said Allan.  “This unit will enable a more timely response in the Winnipeg area and eastern parts of the province.”

The vehicle is equipped with portable and mobile communications equipment, basic life-support emergency medical equipment, a computer system and an accountability system to keep track of response personnel.

The trailer unit contains a complete hazardous materials technician unit with chemical suits, chemical monitoring equipment, decontamination equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus and specialized equipment to deal with chemical situations.
