PROPERTY TAX REDUCTIONS CONTINUE IN BUDGET 2008: SELINGER
Manitoba homeowners and renters will receive a $75 reduction in education property taxes this spring, Finance Minister Greg Selinger announced today.
“We have made significant progress on reducing property taxes each year since 1999,” said Selinger. “In fact, we were the first government to eliminate an entire tax on property, saving homeowners
$100 million annually.”
$100 million annually.”
Budget 2008 increases the Education Property Tax Credit from $525 to $600, a $75 increase. This means homeowners and renters in the 20 school divisions that froze education taxes this year with the help of the province’s $16 million Tax Incentive Grant will pay $75 less in property taxes than they did in 2007, said Selinger.
School divisions that held the line on taxes include:
· Border Land
· Evergreen
· Flin Flon
· Frontier
· Interlake
· Kelsey
· Lakeshore
· Louis Riel
· Mystery Lake
· Park West
· Portage la Prairie
· Prairie Rose
· Red River Valley
· Rolling River
· Seine River
· Southwest Horizon
· Sunrise
· Western
· Winnipeg
· Lord Selkirk
Selinger noted that most residents in school divisions that chose not to freeze taxes will still experience lower property taxes although they will be somewhat reduced due to the property tax credit increase. School divisions that chose not to hold the line on taxes include:
· Beautiful Plains
· Brandon
· Fort la Bosse
· Garden Valley
· Hanover
· Mountain View
· Pembina Trails
· Pine Creek
· Prairie Spirit
· River East Transcona
· Seven Oaks
· St. James-Assiniboia
· Swan Valley
· Turtle Mountain
· Turtle River
