The Recreation and Regional Services Branch supports the development of healthy people and healthy communities. The Branch strives to improve individual well being and to foster the social and economic health of communities through recreation, physical activity and wellness promotion.

Regional offices provide a decentralized delivery system that supports rural and northern communities in stimulating positive change, sustainable growth and an improved quality of life. Municipalities, First Nations, School Boards, and organizations mandated to promote the arts and culture, heritage, recreation, fitness, sport, libraries, tourism and community service have access to this delivery system. Services of the Branch include:

Consultative Services: to assist communities and organizations in meeting their desired needs, including organization, program, facility and community development.

Program Accessibility: Regional offices provide a convenient first point of contact for rural and northern based clients, and provide community-based access to programs, grants and resources, recognizing the unique and specific needs of communities.

On February 21, 2003, Federal-Provincial/Territorial Ministers responsible for physical activity, recreation and sport set a new national target to increase physical activity by ten (10) percentage points in each province and territory by the year 2010, in addition to setting specific directions aimed at improving the health of Canadians through regular physical activity, recreation and sport.
