- Firewood is known to carry harmful forest pests.
- Infested firewood can introduce and spread harmful forest pests to healthy trees.
- Moving firewood from other provinces or from the U.S.A. can introduce invasive forest pests to Manitoba.
THE PROBLEM WITH INVASIVE PESTS
- Invasive forest pests are a serious threat to Manitoba’s trees.
- Invasive forest pests are introduced species that adversely affect habitats they invade economically, environmentally or ecologically.
- Dutch elm disease is an invasive forest pest that is now well established in Manitoba and was likely introduced through the movement of infested firewood into the province.
- Harmful pests that could be brought into Manitoba include emerald ash borer, Asian long-horned beetle and mountain pine beetle.
HOW CAN YOU HELP PROTECT MANITOBA'S TREES?
- Buy firewood locally.
- Do not move firewood from one area into another.
- Do not bring firewood into Manitoba from other provinces or the U.S.A.
- Dispose of firewood at orange drop-off bins that are located on the TransCanada Highway at the Saskatchewan (Kirkella) and Ontario (Whiteshell Provincial Park) borders.
- The importation of firewood from the U.S.A. into Canada is illegal.
