Intergovernmental Affairs

The Branch provides a strategic and systematic approach for the Department of Conservation to work with other governments within Canada on environment and natural resource issues.  Manitoba Conservation contributes a strong presence in discussions on shared environmental management issues across the province and country.

Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment

The Branch supports the Minister and Deputy Minister of Conservation in their official activities representing Manitoba in the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment forum.  The Branch works cooperatively with other Canadian jurisdictions on working groups to collaborate on and advance environmental management issues across Canada.

Manitoba currently co-chairs CCME’s Environmental Assessment Task Group and Water Agenda Development Committee and coordinates Manitoba representation on other CCME groups and committees.

Agreement on Internal Trade

The Branch also represents the department on trade and environment matters related to the Canadian Agreement on Internal Trade, including Chapter 11 on natural resources processing and Chapter 15 on environmental protection.

North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation

The Branch supports the Minister of Conservation as a member of the Canadian Governmental Committee for Canada’s representation on the Commission for Environmental Cooperation established by the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation between the Governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States.  The Agreement complements the environmental provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

International Institute for Sustainable Development

The Branch is in engaged in coordinating work with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) based in Winnipeg, on a number of provincial initiatives such as the Provincial Sustainability Report.


Interprovincial and International Cooperation

The Branch has assisted with interprovincial and international projects.  Recent cooperative efforts have involved China (Anhui Province), France (Bas Rhin Region) and South Africa (Northwest Province).
