Manitoba Remote Sensing Centre

Digital Image Processing Services

The Manitoba Remote Sensing Centre (MRSC) provides a digital image processing service, which generates information from raw satellite imagery. Image classification procedures generate earth resources information with associated statistical data such as land use/land cover from the spectral data in the imagery.

The MRSC will conduct project work that uses remote sensing technology and other forms of geomatic information for natural resource management and environmental monitoring on a client request basis or in joint ventures with other public and/or private sector agencies or academic institutions.

Examples of project work completed or being carried out at the Centre are:

  • Land use/land cover mapping (1994) of the Agro-region of Manitoba
  • Land use/land cover mapping (1986) of the Agro-region of Manitoba
  • Land use/land cover mapping in the Arrowhead region of Minnesota
  • Peatland mapping in the Interlake, southeast and The Pas regions
  • Land use/land cover on the east side of Lake Winnipeg
  • Moose habitat mapping of north central Manitoba
  • Inventory of wild rice seeding in various lakes of Manitoba
  • Forest fuel mapping for various forest regions of Manitoba
  • Determining changes in deer habitat in south-western Manitoba
  • An inventory of deciduous forest for the Louisiana-Pacific forest management area
  • Water quality study of the Shoal Lake area using Landsat-TM
  • Evaluated the use of various types of airborne SAR for crop type identification
  • A study on vegetation change due to nickel refining in the Thompson area, produced by nickel refining in Thompson
  • A study on the impact on vegetation from military activities at C.F.B. Shilo
  • A study to determine point sources of water pollution in the south basin of Lake Winnipeg
  • Use of Landsat to map the vegetation of Barren Ground caribou winter range in northern Manitoba
  • An assessment of SAR to determine forest cover change in the Sandiland forest
