| The purpose of this
conference is to bring together natural resource managers from
across this country to share their experiences working with
Aboriginal people and governments. It is an opportunity to
share best practices based on the success and challenges of the
past.
The government realized that for too long decisions affecting
Aboriginal people have been made without their input, without
benefit of the wisdom and traditional knowledge they have to
share. This is particularly true when it comes to issues of
land use and care. Aboriginal people have an affinity with
the land, a respect and history that is often acknowledged yet
sometimes ignored. This is why today we are working hard to
build strong government to government relationships with
Aboriginal people so that we may share and learn from each other's
best practices and wisdom.
What is working and what is not? What can we learn from
history? What have we learned? How can we implement
what we've learned?
Over the course of this conference these and many other
questions and issues will be discussed. In the end, we will
be one step closer to ensuring best practices that will benefit
all.
As Minister of Manitoba Conservation, I welcome you to share
your experiences and enjoy the conference!
Sincerely,
Stan Struthers
