Protected Areas Initiative

Private Lands

Conservation agencies acquire land through purchases and donations for the purposes of protecting and enhancing natural ecosystems, wildlife and fisheries habitat, and plant or animal species.  The Government of Manitoba has signed Memorandums of Agreement with three conservation agencies to ensure that their private lands meet Manitoba’s standard of protection.

Very little Crown land remains available for protection in the southernmost natural regions of the province, where intensive development limits the establishment of large protected areas.  As a result of conservation agency efforts, many lands within the southernmost natural regions of the province have been added to Manitoba's network of protected areas.
