Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is waste material generated in our homes that poses a risk to health, safety or the environment when managed in the municipal waste management system.
HHW is:
Flammable or combustible products like paint and solvents, reactive products such as pool chemicals, corrosive products like cleaners, toxic products like pesticides, products with heavy metals in them and pharmaceutical products.
Why is HHW a problem?
These products are perfectly safe to use in our houses and fill important needs, however our waste disposal system is not designed to accommodate the higher level of risks associated with their disposal.
What can I do with my HHW now?
The Manitoba Government contracts with Miller Environmental Corporation to collect and dispose of hazardous waste from households. Collection events occur periodically at rural locations and in Winnipeg.
Due to the overwhelming response from the citizens of Winnipeg to properly dispose of their HHW, the depot is moving from 65 Trottier Bay to a larger property, with easier access. As of May 1st, 2007, the HHW depot in Winnipeg will be located at 1803 Hekla Avenue (off Keewatin St.). The hours are the same: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. the first and last Saturday of each month from April to November and the first Saturday of the month from December to March. Events are also held periodically in other communities throughout the province. Call (204) 925-9615 for more information.
What's Planned?
A revised program focus is being proposed for Manitoba which would see the establishment of industry led stewardship programs for HHW and electronics. Green Manitoba has been established to lead and coordinate the development of these programs.
