Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is waste material generated in our homes that poses a risk to health, safety or the environment when thrown in the garbage or down the drain.
HHW is:
Flammable or combustible products like paint and solvents, reactive products such as pool chemicals, corrosive products like some cleaners, toxic products like pesticides, products with heavy metals in them and leftover medications.
Why is HHW a problem?
These products are safe to use, but need special treatment when they are disposed. Certain chemicals can contaminate water and soil.
What can I do with my HHW now?
The Manitoba Government contracts with Miller Environmental Corporation to collect and dispose of hazardous waste from households. Collection events occur periodically at rural locations and in Winnipeg.
The HHW depot in Winnipeg is located at 1803 Hekla Avenue. The hours are: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. the first and last Saturday of each month from April to September and the first Saturday of the month from October to March. Events are also held periodically in other communities throughout the province. Call (204) 925-9615 for more information or visit Green Manitoba.
What's Planned?
Manitoba has passed new regulations for HHW and E-waste which will result in the establishment of industry-led stewardship programs. Several new programs are now in place.
