2010 Winners

The Manitoba Round Table for Sustainable Development announced the 2010 winners of the Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Awards at an awards reception on November 25, 2010 at the Manitoba Legislature. 


Outstanding Achievement in Sustainability Award
Fresh Option Organic Delivery (FOOD), Winnipeg

  • A successful organic retail and delivery business committed to working with local producers to strengthen Manitoba’s organic market and increase the sustainability of our food system.

Action on Climate Change, Air Quality, and Energy Efficiency Award
Building Urban Industries for Local Development (BUILD) Inc., Winnipeg

  • A  non-profit, community-based social enterprise working in 16 of Winnipeg’s poorest neighbourhoods performing energy and water retrofits on low-income housing and providing supportive training and employment opportunities for low income individuals.

Honourable Mention
Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation (BNRC), Brandon Manitoba

  • Through their Brandon Energy Efficiency Program (BEEP) and the Community Led Emission Reduction (CLER) pilot project, the organization has been making measurable improvements in reducing greenhouse gases and increasing energy efficiency.

Sustainability in Pollution Prevention and Product Stewardship Award
Open Mesh Screen Printing, Winnipeg

  • An eco-conscious screen printing shop dedicated to being a safe, environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional garment and paper screen printing.

Education for Sustainability Award
Diversity Food Services, Winnipeg

  • A new concept in campus dinning, Diversity Food Services, is an initiative of the University of Winnipeg and SEED Winnipeg, which trains and employs inner-city residents to create nutritious, affordable and ethnically diverse food options for students and surrounding community with a commitment to locally sourced, organic, and fair-trade ingredients.

Bob Austman, Manitoba Model Forest

  • As the education coordinator of the Manitoba Model Forest Mr. Austman has engaged thousands of youth and more than four hundred teachers in learning about the boreal forest and sustainable development.   

Research and Innovation for Sustainability Award
Manitoba Hydro, Manitoba Hydro Place, Winnipeg

  • A world class, energy efficient building that embodies Manitoba Hydro’s commitment to being a global leader in energy efficiency, sustainability, and green building design.

Contributing to a Sustainable and Prosperous Economy and a Green and Healthy Community:

Outstanding Achievement in Sustainability Award

Bison Transport Inc, Winnipeg
Leads the industry in providing environmentally conscious freight transportation services and has integrated the concepts of sustainable development and environmental responsibility into its operations for over a decade. 

Action on Climate Change, Air Quality, and Energy Efficiency Award

MTS Allstream, Winnipeg
Implements various programs for business, individual consumers, and employees to help reduce their carbon footprints.

Manitoba Liquor Control Commission (MLCC), Winnipeg
Implemented energy efficiency technologies in both their head office and distribution centre resulting in an annual reduction of 376,210 kWh of electricity and 325 tonnes of CO2 annually.

Sustainability in Water and Natural Area Stewardship Award

Poplar River First Nation, Poplar River
Working to protect and manage their traditional territory through the development of the Asatiwisipe Aki Lands Management Plan and other initiatives. They are also working with neighboring First Nations in Manitoba and Ontario in an effort to have a network of traditional territories and protected areas designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Landless Farmers Collective, Winnipeg
A collective of young organic farmers that has set out to preserve vacant green space within the City of Winnipeg for growing food.

Sustainability in Pollution Prevention and Product Stewardship Award

Ashley Leibl, Reliable Tire Recycling, Winkler Rubber Products
Mr. Leibl is a pioneer in the tire recycling industry in Manitoba. His companies Reliable Tire Recycling and Winkler Rubber Products collect roughly 1,000,000 tires annually and manufacture them into rubber products.

Professor Lancelot Coar, Faculty of Architecture, University of Manitoba, Clearwater Architecture Project, Clearwater
With the support of the community Professor Coar and his students have taken abandoned structures in Clearwater and turned them into new structures for the community to enjoy.

Manitoba Marathon, Winnipeg
Has initiated several waste reduction initiatives which has led to the diversion of 7000lbs of waste from local landfills since 2007. 

Education for Sustainability Award

Eleanor Woitowicz, Mel Johnson School Gardening Project, Wabowden
Combining her love of gardening and teaching, Eleanor created the Sustainable School Gardening Project at Mel Johnson School, establishing over 60 vegetable gardens over the past 4 years at the homes of students.

University of Winnipeg Students’ Assocation, Winnipeg
Implemented a successful campaign for the elimination of the sale of bottled water on campus, making the University of Winnipeg the first university in Canada to implement a ban.

Research and Innovation for Sustainability Award

Red River College, Winnipeg
Developed several innovative research and technology development projects focused on climate change including: green buildings, emission reductions, improved vehicle fuel efficiency and the use of renewable fuels in the transportation sector.

Winnipeg Humane Society in association with Number TEN Architectural Group, Winnipeg

  • Winnipeg Humane Society designed and developed new sustainable facilities and a green building.

Individual Award
Amanda Tetrault, Winnipeg

  • Amanda is an ambassador for sustainability as a public school teacher who has integrated sustainability into her classroom for 10 years.

Business Award
Enviro Safe Cleaning, Winnipeg

  • This worker co-operative uses only environmentally responsible cleaning products and practices.

Institution or Organization Award
Centre for Sustainable Transportation, Winnipeg

  • This organization works proactively to achieve sustainable transportation for people and goods in Canada.

Community Group Award
Youth Community Partnership, Gimli

  • This organization demonstrates leadership and environmental stewardship through various initiatives such as water conservation and community enhancement.

Youth Award
Vincent Massey Sustainable Development Committee, Winnipeg

  • This group developed and fundraised for their Alternative Energy Array project — a small-scale wind turbine, solar cells, green roof and greenhouse.

Action on Climate Change, Air Quality and Energy Efficiency Award
Granny's Poultry, Winnipeg

  • Granny’s constructed a new energy efficient hatchery by integrating heat recovery, geothermal and energy management technologies.

Sustainability in Water Stewardship and Natural Area Protection Award
Keystone Agricultural Producers and Delta Waterfowl, Winnipeg

  • These organizations are actively involved in the Alternative Land Use Service (ALUS) agricultural conservation project in the RM of Blanshard.

Sustainability in Pollution Prevention and Product Stewardship Award
Town of Leaf Rapids, Leaf Rapids

  • The town implemented a by-law banning single-use plastic shopping bags.

Education for Sustainability Award
Village of Dunnottar, Dunnottar

  • The village partnered with a University of Manitoba course on water resource management to develop a water conservation education program for the area.

Research and Innovation for Sustainability Award
Scott Nicol, The Pas

  • Scott developed a plan for product stewardship of refrigerators and white goods management.
