Migratory Game Bird Hunting

Oak Hammock Marsh Managed Hunting Area

Oak Hammock Managed Hunting Area (MHA) provides safe hunting experiences by distributing the hunters in this area and ensuring that hunting only takes place on private land with the permission of the owner or lawful occupant. The boundaries of the area are: PTH 67 on the south, Petersfield Road (88N) on the north, PTH 8 on the east and PTH 7 on the west. The Waterfowl Control Area and Oak Hammock Marsh Wildlife Management Area (WMA) are closed to hunting. (link opens in new browser window) [PDF map]

Mandatory registration at the Check Station was discontinued in 2003.

Hunting Regulations

Please consult the annual Manitoba Hunting Guide for season dates, bag limits, and hunting hours.

Hunting is permitted only on private land with written permission from the landowner. Hunting is prohibited on road allowances and water resource drains in the MHA. On any given day not more than four hunters, including the landowner, will be permitted per quarter section (160 acres) of land or two hunters on holdings of less than 160 acres. This quota aids in the distribution of waterfowl from crops and enhances quality hunting by avoiding firing-lines and high hunter densities on private land.

An individual may hunt to a maximum of six days during the season in the MHA. This restriction is intended to provide a wider opportunity for more hunters.

Dead or crippled birds must be retrieved immediately. If they are within the boundaries of the area closed to hunting, firearms must be left outside the area. Crippled birds must be killed immediately.

Hunters may be asked for waterfowl hunting data while in the field. Your co-operation is greatly appreciated.

To Hunt at Oak Hammock MHA

Obtain a Managed Hunting Area Landowners Permission Form from Manitoba Conservation, 200 Saulteaux Crescent in Winnipeg, the Oak Hammock Marsh Conservation Centre, or the Manitoba Conservation Selkirk District Office, #1 Keystone Drive in Selkirk. Landowner Permission Forms [PDF 850 KB] are also available for download.

Take the form(s) to the landowner of the property you wish to hunt. Have it signed and completed with only one name and one quarter section per form (multiple dates are allowed).

Take the signed permission form and your valid Manitoba Game Bird licence and Federal Migratory Game Bird licence (with attached Habitat Conservation Stamp) with you into the field while you are hunting.

Why Managed Hunting

Managed Hunting will continue to be included as part of the recreational benefits associated with the Oak Hammock Marsh WMA. Maintaining a co-operative relationship between hunters and landowners will provide regulated quality hunting with the potential for hunters to distribute feeding waterfowl from private crops. The "Waterfowl Control Area" provides protection for staging waterfowl and enhances public use of the Oak Hammock Marsh WMA.

Hunters should exercise discretion when traveling on wet, unmaintained roads. Excessive damage to roads may cause additional expense to municipalities for maintenance and repair.
