The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regulates international trade in certain species and their parts or products to protect them from over exploitation.
In addition to any other permit, CITES permits are required to export out of Canada or import into Canada a black bear, gray wolf, and sandhill cranes. Black bear and sandhill crane hunting trophies that are fresh, frozen, or salted, and that are in the personal possession of the Canadian or American hunter while being exported or imported to their respective residence, are exempt from CITES permit requirements. Black bear paws and claws that are detached from the hide must be accompanied by a CITES permit.
Mounted or otherwise preserved specimens of listed species, and specimens in any condition that are being transported by another person, will continue to require a CITES permit.
For information regarding the permits, visit the CITES website or call 1-800-668-6767.
