It is important to Manitoba’s livestock industry that damage caused by predators is addressed. Manitoba Conservation has entered into an agreement with the Manitoba Trappers Association to administer and deliver problem predator removal services to livestock producers. Under the agreement, after a livestock claim is made through Manitoba Agriculture Services Corporation (MASC), those predators causing the damage are targeted. Most predators removed have been coyotes.
Property owners can also invite trappers on their land any time of the year to remove coyotes, wolves and black bear that are causing damage to private property. The taking of any of wildlife under these provisions must be reported within 10 days to a Natural Resource Officer. This does not apply to cougars that may be causing property damage as cougars are a protected species and may not be taken under any circumstance.
Manitoba is considering developing a coyote hunting season that will allow more people to participate in removing problem coyotes. For more information on the coyote hunting season, check our website at www.manitoba.ca/conservation/wildlife
Manitoba Conservation, Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives, MASC, and the Manitoba Trappers Association conducted predator management workshops in Roblin, St. Rose, Gypsumville, Steinbach, Inwood and Minnedosa in 2007/08. The information helps people to help themselves in dealing with predators. Over 300 livestock producers, hunters, trappers and other interested citizens received information on animal husbandry techniques, compensation claim investigations, and hunting and trapping methods. Workshops are being considered again for the winter of 2009-10.
