These are some suggestions to help people get the most out of development programs.

Think back to training programs you have been to...

  • How often have you been sent to a training workshop without knowing anything about it in advance?
  • How often did you have unanswered questions about the program?
  • How often were you sent to a program not knowing exactly why you were going, what you were supposed to get out of it, and what changes were expected of you when you returned to the workplace?

Research has shown that training is more effective if it is preceded and followed by discussions with one's supervisor. This is a two-way conversation.

For people to benefit most from the program, they discuss the program with their supervisor and identify what they hope to gain from it. When people return from the workshop there should be a follow-up discussion to identify what was learned, how the individual intends to use the skills and knowledge, and what support the supervisor can give.
