Quality of Life: Health Care Coverage

Healthcare Overview Coverage Regional Health Authorities Key Facilities

Manitoba Health directly pays for medically required physicians’ services and hospitalization costs for permanent residents of Manitoba.  To be eligible for coverage, residents must be Canadian citizens or have Immigration status, establish Manitoba permanent residency, and be resident in Manitoba for at least six months per year. Benefits include the costs of physicians’ services, surgery/anaesthesia, and physician-ordered x-ray and laboratory services. Other insured services include certain services by optometrists, chiropractors and dental surgeons.

Manitoba residents are also eligible for partial reimbursement of pharmaceutical costs under the Pharmacare program. Residents are required to pay a portion of the cost of eligible prescription drugs (annual Pharmacare deductible).

Under the Northern Patient Transportation Program, residents of designated areas of Northern Manitoba may also be eligible for subsidization of the cost of transportation required to obtain medical or hospital care at the nearest available location.
