Manitoba is served by 80 hospitals and health centres throughout its 11 regional health authorities. Three key facilities are Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre, the St. Boniface General Hospital and CancerCare Manitoba.
The Health Sciences Centre is the largest health care referral, teaching and research Centre serving Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario and Nunavut. Located in Winnipeg, it is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Canada and a major referral centre for complex health problems requiring expert consultation and sophisticated investigation and management.
Designated as the trauma centre for Manitoba, the Health Sciences Centre is also the centre for transplants and for most hospital-based pediatric care in the province. The Health Sciences Centre is formally affiliated with the University of Manitoba and CancerCare Manitoba.
St. Boniface General Hospital has grown to become one of Canada's leading patient care and research facilities. The second largest hospital in Manitoba, it has significant expertise in the areas of cardiac sciences, emergency medicine, gastrointestinal disease, neurosciences, oncology, palliative care, perinatal care, geriatric medicine, and family medicine.
St. Boniface General Hospital serves the people of Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario and parts of Saskatchewan. A major teaching and research centre, the Hospital is affiliated with the University of Manitoba's faculties of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and other health-care disciplines.
The St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre undertakes research programs that are directly linked to clinical departments in the Hospital: infectious diseases, respiratory medicine, nephrology, cardiology, clinical nursing research, cancer research.
CancerCare Manitoba is responsible for cancer prevention, detection, care, research and education for the people of Manitoba. CancerCare Manitoba provides consultation and treatment for those living with cancer and blood disorders at its two locations in Winnipeg.
