Western Canada's oldest university, the University of Manitoba, located in Winnipeg, is recognized as one of Canada's leading research and teaching universities. The University of Manitoba offers all of the province's professional programs as well as the arts and sciences for a total of over 90 degrees, with more than 60 at the undergraduate level. Most academic departments offer graduate studies programs leading to master or doctoral degrees.
Major academic units are the faculties of: agricultural and food sciences; architecture; business; engineering; graduate studies; law; medicine; science; arts; dentistry; education; environment, earth and resources; extended education; human ecology; music; nursing; pharmacy; kinesiology and recreation management; and social work; and the schools of agriculture; art; dental hygiene; and medical rehabilitation.
The University’s total enrolment for 2008/09 was 26,238 full-time and part-time students, including 3,694 graduate students. Academic staff currently number 3,363 full- and part-time instructors and the University’s operating budget for 2008/09 totaled approximately $460.4 million.
The Faculty of Extended Education coordinates a wide range of programs through which degree courses and non-degree or certificate courses are offered.
