University of Manitoba: Research Environment
Centres of Excellence
Research Chairs
Centres & Institutes
The University of Manitoba is a member of 15 of the 20 Canadian National Networks of Centres of Excellence. ISIS Canada (Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures) is a National Centre of Excellence exploring applications of remote sensing technology and new materials in structures, and is headquartered in the University’s Faculty of Engineering.
The University of Manitoba currently holds 48 Canada Research Chairs. Chairholders are research leaders or rising stars in natural sciences and engineering, health sciences, social sciences and humanities.
The University’s 37 research centres and institutes allow it to organize research programs according to broad areas of knowledge, providing unique opportunities to conduct research in multidisciplinary contexts.
The University is the location of the federal government’s Freshwater Institute and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Cereal Research Centre; the provincial government’s Agricultural Services Complex and the Cadham Provincial Laboratory. It is also associated with the National Research Council’s Institute for Biodiagnostics. As well, there are close ties with teaching and research hospitals such as St. Boniface General Hospital and Health Sciences Centre, and their research foundations. The University is also linked with the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital.
Technology Transfer
Transferring new technologies from the lab to the marketplace is a growing activity at the University of Manitoba. The University’s Technology Transfer Office provides a range of intellectual property services to the University community and to Manitoba industry, including:
The Office links University research expertise and capabilities with Canadian industry, which has resulted in hundreds of partnerships. At the Bannatyne Campus, medical devices and pharmaceuticals are commercialized in partnership with the Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface General Hospital and their associated research foundations and centres.
In addition to being responsible for commercializing technology, the Technology Transfer Office maintains a broad inventory of technologies and has licensed dozens of these technologies to companies at home and abroad. The Office has licensed important technologies in agricultural, engineering, and physical and life sciences fields.
SMARTpark
SMARTpark is a 120-acre multi-tenant facility, located at the University of Manitoba, which allows Manitoba's knowledge-based industries to benefit from close university-industry interaction. SMARTpark fosters research collaboration between the university and industry, and boosts the transfer of new technologies to the marketplace. Tenants represent a variety of fields including information and communications technology, medical devices, advanced composite materials, electrical engineering, agricultural technology, biotechnology, biopharmaceuticals, functional foods and nutraceuticals.
