Children and Youth Opportunities is a department focused on supporting Manitoba’s children and youth to achieve their best possible outcomes at all stages of development, both for the well-being of each child and the safety and prosperity of our province. The experiences of early childhood have a profound impact on the overall health and well being of individuals throughout their lifetime. The most significant brain development we will ever experience takes place prenatally and in the pre-school years. Supporting young children by supporting their families in this critical period has individual benefits that literally last a lifetime and societal benefits that extend to the economy, population health and community safety.

Wise investments need to be sustained to be truly effective. We know that the period of transition from childhood to adulthood has particular challenges for all youth and families. The department is committed to supporting families and youth as they navigate adolescence. We know that this is best done by providing opportunities that challenge and stimulate youth while supporting their positive development, building on their potential and passion and increasing their connection to their community. When done effectively, these positive opportunities serve to discourage youth from choosing the negative options that are so present in their daily lives.

At its core, Children and Youth Opportunities is about prevention. We all want the best for our children, right from the start and as they grow to adulthood. We know we can’t protect them from every challenge or pitfall, nor should we, but we can provide the skills they will need to navigate those pitfalls and improve the odds that they will emerge safe and strong on the other side. The programs offered through Healthy Child Manitoba, Recreation and Regional Services, MB4Youth and the Crime Prevention Unit draw on research and evidence to increase our abilities as parents, communities and as a province to set a strong foundation and support our children’s successful journey.

We invite you to look through the website and the programs and services that are offered. We also invite you to come back often as we develop the website and continue to develop the Department of Children and Youth Opportunities.
