Manitoba's Strategy to Keep Kids Out of Crime

Creating Youth Opportunities

Positive after school activities and increased employment opportunities for youth help give kids and communities a healthier and more successful future.

  • Beginning this winter, a new after school program modelled after the successful Chicago After School Matters program will allow Manitoba youth to receive hands-on training in a variety of fields (arts, sciences, communication, technology and sports) from working professionals. The Manitoba government is proud to have True North Sports and Entertainment as the program's flagship community partner. Watch for more details.

  • The Lighthouse program has been expanded. There are now 71 Lighthouse sites across the province. These facilities give kids access to safe and positive activities after school. Over the last 10 years more than 1.1 million visits have been made to Lighthouses by children and youth.

  • The new Manitoba Mentors program connects students from schools around the province with employers from a variety of industries.

  • Manitoba Youth Job Centres placed almost 600 youth in jobs across Manitoba last year.

  • Over the last ten years, 10,000 youth have been hired to work on Green Team projects in Winnipeg and in rural Manitoba.

For more programs and services that help create opportunities for youth please see the complete program list.

The Manitoba government will continue to invest in programs and activities that give youth the skills and experience they need to create healthy and successful futures.
