Accessibility Advisory Council

ACCESSIBILITY ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 10:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.

The Chairperson welcomed Council members to the first meeting of the Accessibility Advisory Council. He presented a short chronological account of accessibility legislation in other jurisdictions and the work that has been performed to date on this issue in Manitoba. He acknowledged the efforts of Barrier-Free Manitoba in calling on the Government to adopt provincial accessibility legislation.  Members of the Council introduced themselves and the constituents they represent starting with the Vice-Chairperson.

The Chairperson and Council members read through The Accessibility Advisory Council Act, ensuring there is an understanding of the Act and their responsibility as members of the Council. There was some suggested changes to the wording used in Section (4) of the Terms of Reference; Guiding Principles. Yvonne, Jim and Judy agreed to work on the revisions and make a new version of the Terms of Reference available for review and approval next meeting. It was agreed language used in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons (CRPD) with Disabilities be applied. Pending final approval from the Minister’s Office, the Terms of Reference will be made public.

The has scheduled a half-day forum from 9:00 a.m. - 12 Noon on the Main Floor of the Winnipeg Convention Centre on Friday, December 2, recognizing (CRPD). There will be a series of speakers addressing the CRPD, including highlights of actions being taken by the Province to implement of the CRPD.  The Chairperson of the Advisory Council will speak on working of the Council and the progress being made on accessibility legislation. The Minister will be using this opportunity to make a detailed and formal announcement concerning the Council. An invitation will be forwarded to all Council members encouraging them to attend.

On the agenda for the next meeting of the Council will be a discussion of the Accessibility of Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the standards in place.

The Chairperson has the ability to call additional meetings as he feels are merited.
