As Manitoba's Minister responsible for Persons with Disabilities, I am pleased to welcome you to the Disabilities Issues Office (DIO) website.
Our government recognizes the challenges Manitobans with disabilities face in achieving full participation as citizens in this province. These barriers may be architectural, vocational, or attitudinal, but their presence often prevents persons with disabilities from enjoying the rights and privileges of citizenship.
Our vision is an inclusive society that promotes policies and programs designed to assist persons with disabilities reach their full potential, whether that be obtaining and sustaining employment, gaining access to public buildings and their services, or accessing the supports needed to achieve independence.
As a person with a disability who spent a number of years working with community organizations before being elected to the Legislature, I recognize the value and importance of working with the broader community in addressing challenges and fostering positive change. The DIO consults frequently with various disability groups and organizations, serving as the centre of responsibility for coordinating provincial policy. One of the main reasons our province created the DIO was to give persons with disabilities a better opportunity to participate in decision making regarding the design, organization and operating of programs and services which affect them.
Our website is designed to provide the public with a greater understanding of how the province is working towards a barrier-free society, open and accessible to all. We are always striving to improve our website, making it more user-friendly, while providing practical and meaningful information for you. I invite you to contact us. Your comments help us serve you better.
Thank you for your interest in the Disabilities Issues Office.
Honourable Jennifer Howard
Minister responsible for Persons with Disabilities
