A new apartment complex in Steinbach opened today creating more affordable housing for low- to moderate-income Manitobans. The apartments will also be accessible for people with disabilities. Province Provides Improvements For People With Disabilities On Employment And Income Assistance: Melnick

Manitobans with disabilities living in an institution or hospital can now use certain lump sum payments to improve their quality of life without affecting their Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) benefits. In addition, further changes will exempt Canada Access Grants for Persons with Permanent Disabilities if recipients are receiving EIA, Family Services and Housing Minister Christine Melnick, minister responsible for persons with disabilities, announced today.

Unique Inner-city Project will Create Needed, New Accommodations for Low-income People

Low-income residents of Winnipeg's inner city will have access to more affordable housing with the construction of "pocket suites" through a new pilot project developed by S.A.M. (Properties) Inc. in collaboration with several community organizations. Manitoba opens new Disabilities Issues Office on International Day of Disabled Persons

The province's first ever Disabilities Issues Office was opened today by Christine Melnick, minister responsible for persons with disabilities, at a special event marking the International Day of Disabled Persons. The province also announced interim grants that total $374,600 to support the Mobility Disadvantaged Transportation Program and funding in support of Winnipeg's handi-transit service.
