Making Changes - Changing/Reviewing Information

What if my situation changes, a correction is required, or I want to request a review of my information?

Manitoba Student Aid conducts a 'Review' in cases where new information may make a change to your previous assessment for student aid. If you request a review of your original assessment, you may also have to submit documentation verifying the changes. All information is subject to verification. Please be sure the information you provide is accurate and complete.

Please note that all changes are subject to program maximums.

You must notify Manitoba Student Aid in writing if you (or your spouse) have any changes in:

  • personal information (name, marital status, address, family size or family breakdown)
  • financial information (change in pre-study or study period income, for you or your spouse)
  • assets (mutual funds, bank balance, Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), change in vehicle information, etc.)
  • academic information (change in your school or program, course load, study period start and end dates, academic progress, number of years in studies, tuition/book/supply costs
  • ability of parents to provide a parental contribution (loss/reduction in parental income, parents retired, change in dependants, etc.
  • other (lost documents, uninsured medical/dental costs*, etc.) There are program limits to various expenses in some of these categories.

* Expenses such as medical/dental/optical costs may be allowed if verified. Please note: the miscellaneous component of the living allowance for students recognizes a modest amount for uninsured medical/dental costs.

These changes may affect the amount of assistance you are eligible to receive. If a Review is required, it can take from four to six weeks to process, which may delay the date you receive your assistance.
If you have changed your school or program, you must also return any uncashed loan documents.

Who can request a Review?

You can request a Review if you have additional expenses, exceptional circumstances, or changes that could affect your award amount, as indicated above. In some cases, students have exceptional circumstances that are not normally provided for in accordance with the policies and procedures on the initial assessment. A review of your application may be possible.

Parents of dependent students may also request a review if they are unable to provide the expected parental contribution; for example, if they have additional expenses, exceptional circumstances, or reduced income.

How do I request a Review?

To request a review of your information, you must submit your request in writing along with a letter of explanation and the required information or forms as shown below.

What’s the deadline to submit a Review?

All information and required documentation must be received no later than two months before your period of study ends. Manitoba Student Aid cannot release any funds after your period of study end date.

How much will I receive and when will I be notified of the results?

Reviews take from four to six weeks to complete. The information you submit for a Review will be considered and you will be advised of any change to your assistance (whether a higher or lower amount) on a new Notice of Assistance letter.

If you are already receiving the maximum assistance available for your academic period, additional funds cannot be granted.

However, your increased or reduced need may affect your Manitoba Bursary or Canada Millennium Scholarship Bursary awards should you be eligible for them.

Remember that student aid funding is intended to supplement, not replace, resources available from students, parents, and spouses/partners. Your eligibility for assistance is based on an assessment of your total allowed costs and expected resources.

What do I need to provide?

When you submit a request for a Review, in most cases you will need to provide additional information. See each change below for the corresponding information and forms you need to provide. (Note: In some cases, additional information will be needed to clarify information you submitted. Student Aid will advise you if that is the case.) If you do not provide the required information, Manitoba Student Aid will not review your file.
