
The Province has committed $176,000 in funding to partner with Project Breakaway to assist individuals trying to break away from the streets and move on to healthier and more productive lifestyles. The funding is for a coordinator and two outreach workers to work exclusively with clients of Project Breakaway. The positions are based at the Main Street Project.
Established by the Winnipeg Police Service, clients engaged in Project Breakaway face numerous issues, including aggressive behaviours, aggressive panhandling, public intoxication/drug abuse, homelessness, transience and mental health issues. The provincial contribution has enabled Project Breakaway to provide case management services to coordinate health and social services and implement a housing first approach. This intervention has the potential to decrease the clients' reliance on emergency services and link them with housing and supports.
