Homeless Shelters

In April 2007, the Province announced the Roof Over Every Bed initiative, which invested an additional $1.2 million in homeless shelters in Winnipeg.   The initiative stabilized the funding for the Winnipeg shelters and increased the shelter capacity for housing homeless individuals.  Subsequent funding has brought the increase to $1.7 million (64 per cent).

Winnipeg homeless shelters currently have the capacity to house approximately 435 homeless individuals.  During the coldest days of the year, the capacity can increase to 500.  The Winnipeg homeless shelters are:

  • Main Street Project
  • Salvation Army Booth Centre, and
  • Siloam Mission.

There are also homeless shelters in Thompson and The Pas, which have the capacity to house approximately 55 individuals.

Since 2007, normal shelter capacity has increased by 100 beds.  An additional 80 beds can be added during the coldest months.  This past winter, the Winnipeg shelter providers developed a Cold Weather Strategy to ensure that additional space is available and additional service is offered during extreme cold.

Emergency and transitional shelter is also provided to homeless individuals by organizations who serve specific populations, such as women fleeing domestic abuse, youth, individuals with mental health issues, and short-term treatment centres.  Institutions, such as hospitals and correctional facilities, often include people who would otherwise be homeless.
