Manitoba Housing rents affordable and suitable housing to Manitobans in need. Manitoba Housing administers and manages approximately 13,100 rental housing residences across the province and strives to provide quality housing at an affordable rent to individuals, seniors, and families. Manitoba Housing does not provide emergency housing.

Types of Housing

Manitoba Housing provides a range of quality housing such as apartments, townhouses, duplexes and houses. The following are examples of how families are matched to appropriate housing.

Families with Children

Apartments, townhouses and duplexes ranging from 2 to 5 bedrooms have been specifically designated for families. Family members will be considered by age and gender to determine the appropriate number of bedrooms for the family. Manitoba Housing follows National Occupancy Standards

A Single Person or Couples (no children)

Designated locations in the City of Winnipeg have studio apartments for single persons and one-bedroom apartments for couples. In rural communities where the building does not have studio apartments, a single person would receive a one-bedroom apartment.

People 55 and over

Designated locations in the City of Winnipeg have studio apartments that are rented to single persons and one-bedroom apartments are rented to couples. In rural communities where the building does not have studio apartments, a single person would receive a one-bedroom apartment.

Eligibility

To be eligible for housing accommodations with Manitoba Housing, you must:

  • Be a Canadian Citizen, Landed Immigrant or Refugee.
  • Be a person 18 years of age or older.
  • Be a person able to cope independently in a self contained unit.
  • Have a total gross family income which does not exceed the Housing Income Limit Guidelines.
  • Have a good rental history including past and present landlord reference checks.

How do I apply for housing?

To assist with specific housing accommodations, it would be helpful if medical documentation is included with the application form if there is a medical concern directly related to tenancy (e.g. mobility or wheelchair access).

Rent
Generally, rent is based on an affordable percentage of the household’s total gross income.

Some income restrictions may apply.
Studio Apartment: 25% of total gross income
1 or more bedrooms: 27% of total gross income
Employment and Income Assistance Recipients have a fixed rent.
