Description The Manitoba Shelter Benefit (MSB) is a monthly benefit to help low income seniors, families, persons with disabilities and some people receiving income assistance pay their rent.
spacer
Coverage Financial assistance, of up to $210 per month, is available to eligible persons with disabilities who rent their living accommodation in the private market and who are required to spend a large portion of their income on rent. The amount of the benefit depends on household income and the monthly cost of renting.

Eligibility

In order to be considered for the MSB for Persons with a Disability, more than 25 per cent of household income must be spent on rent and the applicant must:

  • have a disability; or,
  • have a spouse or common-law partner with a disability; or have an adult dependent with a disability living at home who does not pay rent; and
  • be under 55 years old and have no children under 18 living at home; and
  • be a renter in Manitoba; and
  • be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or refugee claimant; and
  • be a single renter with an annual household income less than $21,168; or
  • be in a two person household (a couple or adult dependent and caregiver) with an annual income less than $23,760.

If you rent from Manitoba Housing, or receive another type of housing benefit you are not eligible for the MSB for Persons with a Disability.

You may be able to get a different benefit if you receive Employment and Income Assistance (EIA), and pay rent, and you or your spouse or common-law partner has a disability.

In this case, please talk to your EIA worker or see the Fact Sheet Manitoba Shelter Benefit for Persons Receiving Employment and Income Assistance (PDF 106 KB).
