Manitoba Shelter Benefit for Seniors

Description The Manitoba Shelter Benefit (MSB) is a monthly benefit to help low income seniors, families, persons with disabilities and some people receiving income assistance pay their rent.

Coverage Financial assistance, of up to $210 per month, is available to eligible persons aged 55 and over who rent their living accommodation in the private market and who are required to spend a large portion of their income on rent. The amount of the benefit depends on household income and the monthly cost of renting.

Eligibility

In order to be considered for the MSB for Seniors, more than 25 per cent of household income must be spent on rent and the applicant must be:

  • at least 55-years of age or their spouse or common-law partner is 55-years of age or older; and
  • a renter in Manitoba; and
  • a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or refugee claimant; and
  • a single renter with an annual household income less than $21,168; or
  • a couple with an annual household income less than $23,760.
If you rent from Manitoba Housing, or receive another type of housing benefit, or receive Employment and Income Assistance, you are not eligible for the MSB for Seniors.
