Office of the Vulnerable Persons' Commissioner
In keeping with the Department's goal of supporting adults living
with a mental disability to safely live and participate in the community,
the Office of the Vulnerable Persons' Commissioner is responsible
for implementing the substitute decision making provisions of The
Vulnerable Persons Living with a Mental Disability Act. A substitute
decision maker is an individual who has been appointed by the Commissioner
to make decisions for a vulnerable person who is incapable of making
his or her own decisions.
The Office of the Vulnerable Persons' Commissioner is responsible
for:
- conducting preliminary investigations of applications from substitute
decision makers;
- appointing hearing panels to review and make recommendations
regarding the need for and parameters of substitute decision maker
appointments, where the criteria are met;
- appointing substitute decision makers and maintaining a register
of appointments of substitute decision makers;
- providing information to vulnerable individuals, their families,
substitute decision makers and the general public regarding the
process for appointment of substitute decision makers; and
- reviewing existing Orders of Supervision.
