Shelter Improvements for Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) Participants

In April 2009, the province increased the board and room with care and supervision allowance for people with disabilities receiving EIA who live with a family member. The board and room rate increased from $441 per month to $566 per month for single adults, a 28 per cent increase. This rate is now equal to the amount available to someone who is living in a private home with a non-relative.

For more information on EIA board and room rates, please contact your local EIA Office. please contact a Winnipeg Service Location or Rural and Northern Service Location in your area.

Improvements to the Manitoba Shelter Benefit (MSB) for Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) Participants

Effective July 2009, the Manitoba Shelter Benefit for adults without children on income assistance renting in the private market increased to $50 per month (from $35).  Amounts for persons living in private board and room arrangements increased to $30 per month (from $15).  These improvements will further assist eligible EIA participants with the costs of paying rent.

Supporting People to Transition from Welfare to Work

MYTEAM

Starting early in 2010, a four-year Manitoba Youth Transitional Employment Assistance Mentorship pilot project (MYTEAM) will support youths between 16 to 21 years of age to make a successful transition from the child‑welfare system to living independently in the community.

MYTEAM will offer eligible youth a variety of services and supports to help them:

  • establish goals and develop personalized plans to achieve their goals;
  • complete high school, post-secondary education or other training;
  • find stable and supportive housing;
  • learn life skills and money management skills with the help of job coaches and mentors.

MYTEAM participants will receive direct financial assistance to pay for daily living needs, education and training and remain independent of Employment and Income Assistance (EIA).

Rebound

In July 2009, Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) and Employment Manitoba (EM) launched a joint initiative to ensure Manitobans have the skills required to be successful in the labour market. Rebound supports low income workers affected by the economic downturn as well as Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) participants who can benefit from Employment Manitoba services. Eligible Manitobans receive employment and training-related supports, as well as a living allowance, from EM for the duration of their approved Rebound action plan.
