Manitoba Family Services and Labour

Thrive! - a five-year plan for helping Manitobans with autism spectrum disorders and their families

Building Awareness

Young Boy Looking Away from Camera

People with autism and their families are often involved with many services, such as child care, education, health, and in rare instances, police services and the justice system. Often, the challenges experienced by people with ASD (ex: how they communicate and interact with others) are not always recognized or well understood by professionals in these areas. The general public needs to better understand how people with autism perceive and interact with their community.

Moving Forward in Manitoba

  • ASD awareness training for professionals in service sectors commonly used by persons with autism
  • public awareness campaign to increase community understanding and support for persons with autism
  • web-based materials that provide accurate information about autism and how others can help people and families living with autism
  • learning opportunities for school support teams

How We Can Get There

  • literature and resources that help professionals understand autism (ex: current resources used by teachers)
  • creative learning opportunities for educators and other professionals including web-based, distance learning and mentorships
  • autism awareness training to professionals in key service sectors (ex: child care, police, etc.)
  • public awareness campaign
