Communications Services Centre
Autism often has a big effect on a person's ability to communicate. Many people with ASD find it easier to express themselves in alternative ways, such as with computers, or through art or music. A longterm goal is to establish a communications service centre, as part of Specialized Services for Children and Youth (SSCY). This service will co-ordinate, develop and deliver programs that optimize alternative communication devices and technologies for children and adults across Manitoba.
Moving Forward in Manitoba
- access to a range of effective alternative communication devices and technologies for children, youth and adults affected by autism in communities throughout Manitoba
- a centralized process, through a communications services centre, to co-ordinate, support and evaluate communication needs of individuals and recommend appropriate programs to address those needs
How We Can Get There
- an inventory of programs proven most effective in promoting communication for children, youth and adults with autism
- a partnership with SSCY to establish a communications services centre to co-ordinate the delivery of alternative communications programs
- a professional learning community including speech language pathologists, occupational therapists and educators to explore the emerging research and technologies
