Manitoba's Fleet Ambulance Program

Manitoba's fleet ambulance program was introduced in 2001 to provide the safest possible fleet of ambulances.""

Replacement of the fleet was completed over five years. Ambulances are replaced regularly based on approved standards.

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Branch of Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living (MHSAL) manages the ambulance fleet program with Vehicle and Equipment Management Agency (VEMA), a special operating agency of Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation. Operating costs for the managed fleet, including fuel, maintenance and repairs, are provided by MHSAL.

Provincial ambulances are selected through a tendering process based on specifications developed by provincial EMS stakeholders. Primary considerations in the design specifications ensure ambulances meet operational requirements and innovation to enhance patient, paramedic and passenger security and safety.

The current provincial ambulances are designed by Crestline Coach and incorporate many of their engineering innovations.  Ambulance vehicle design meets or exceeds the Manitoba specification.

Safety Innovations

Safety innovations featured in this design include:

  • Enhanced vehicle conspicuity decaling package
  • Enhanced emergency lighting notification
  • Onboard video monitoring system
  • Vehicle monitoring, including Automatic Vehicle Informatics (AVI) and  Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL)
Patient care compartment design

Manitoba EMS stakeholders researched, developed and advised on a new safety enhanced patient care compartment design. Stakeholders included representation from:

  • Frontline paramedics
  • Workplace Safety and Health
  • Regional health authorities
  • EMS unions

Manitoba continues to research, design, test and implement enhancements to the ambulance fleet. These ongoing efforts ensure the citizens of Manitoba receive the safest and best quality ambulance product available for patient care.
