Technician Examination

The Technician examination consists of two parts – a multiple choice written examination plus a hands on practical examination.

Upon receipt of a completed license application candidates will receive registration information regarding the written exam. Please note that written exams are held on a monthly basis.

Written Examination

The examination is made up of 100 multiple choice, matching, true / false exam and scenario exam items. The exam items are based on the following:

Candidates are required to achieve a mark of 75% to pass the written examination. Candidates may access up to 2 retest written examinations should they be unsuccessful.

Practical Examination

Upon successful completion of the written exam, candidates will receive detailed registration information for the practical exam.

The Technician level practical evaluation includes five (5) individual testing stations. These stations are isolated or simple-combination skill demonstration. At each of the stations, candidates will be asked a short series of questions about the skill or situation.

Candidates that are successful in overall points, above 75% will receive a “successful” performance rating.

  • A candidate that misses a required element may receive a "re-demonstrate" performance rating in that component. (A required element criteria is identified as something that could potentially cause further injury to the patient. Eg: administering nitro to a patient without first taking a blood pressure; not checking a pulse pre management of a fracture.) Candidates will be required to re-demonstrate only that particular component.
  • If a candidate receives an “unsuccessful” performance rating on the overall score, they must redo all 5 stations.

Candidates that are unsuccessful will be permitted 2 retest practical examinations.

Practical examinations will be video recorded for the purpose of quality assurance and exam appeals.

Prior to the start of the practical evaluation, all exam candidates will be required to sign a declaration regarding exam integrity, inappropriate behavior and video recording.

Please note that exam candidates are expected to wear gloves in the fracture management and immobilization skill stations. Candidates are required to provide their own gloves.

All other equipment required to complete the EMR stations will be provided.
