Physician Management Institutes

The Physician Manager Institute (PMI) workshop series, offered by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), has been a mainstay for the past 25 years in providing support for physicians to create positive health system change. The PMI is an accredited professional and personal development program designed to prepare physicians, at any career stage, to be effective leaders and managers. PMI is the only educational program uniquely focused on the role of physicians as leaders and managers in the Canadian health care system.
The following 8 PMI workshops have been sponsored by Manitoba Health since 2007:

  • Effective Management and Leadership Begins with Self-Awareness (2xs)
  • High Performance Teams Need Inspirational Leaders
  • Negotiation and Conflict Management: Vital Skills for Success
  • Change Management: Successful Planning and Implementation
  • Strategic Planning: From Vision to Action
  • Engaging Others
  • Leading Change and Innovation

 Manitoba Health is in the process of planning workshops for 2011/12. Details and registration information will be posted here as course schedules are finalized.

Workshop registration costs are covered by Manitoba Health, including course material. Prior to the course, participants are expected to consider projects and partnerships which they may apply the acquired skills to prior to and during the course. Accommodation, travel and expenses are the responsibility of the participant.

Course attendees include physicians from across the province, midwives, nurse practitioners, nurses and clinic business managers. Participation is limited depending upon the course. Maximum participation is 40.

Canadian Certified Physician Executive

The Canadian Medical Association and the Canadian Society of Physician Executives have established the Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) credential.

Its purpose is to recognize and advance physician leadership through a nationally recognized, peer generated credential process.

Physicians who which to acquire the CCPE credential have two options for achieving this designation:

  1. An academic route that requires completion of a specified number of CMA’s Physician Management Institute (PMI) courses or
  2. A practice eligibility route, in which the credential is awarded based on life experience, educational achievement and significant leadership contributions.
