The standards core document will be supported by two companion documents:

  1. Supplemental Document I: Public Health Nursing: Prenatal, Postpartum and Early Childhood Practice Examples

           And

  1. Supplemental Document II:  Public Health Nursing: Prenatal, Postpartum and Early Childhood Tool Kit. ( in development)

Objective

The Public Health Nursing standards define the minimum practice expectations for public health nurses (PHNs) in Manitoba in the areas of prenatal, postpartum and early childhood.

Background

Public health nursing practice aims to improve population health using strategies that promote, protect, and preserve the health of children and families in Manitoba.

The Provincial Public Health Nursing Standards for prenatal, postpartum, and early childhood were  developed using a collaborative process involving Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living, and regional health authorities. These standards integrate and build on a variety of local and national documents. They are informed by current evidence, as well as the professional expertise of  PHNs in practice and reflect consensus agreement of PHNs and public health managers in Manitoba.

Provincial Public Health Nursing Standards: Prenatal, Postpartum, and Early Childhood will be implemented in a phased in approach.
