The adult eating disorder program offers both inpatient and outpatient services. The program has three general goals:

  • to provide assessment and treatment to people suffering from anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa
  • to educate the public, professionals, patients and their families about eating disorders, and
  • to provide consultation and recommendations to other mental health professionals.

The Adult Outpatient Program offers individual therapy (mostly cognitive behavioural) with the goal of increasing insight, self-esteem and awareness of feelings, as well as improving coping skills. The outpatient program is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Nutritional counseling and rehabilitation are essential components of treatment, with the focus being on establishing healthy eating patterns based on Canada’s Food Guide and achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight. Therapy groups are also offered as part of the program.

A list of group sessions that may be offered as part of the treatment program include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Group
  • Nutrition Group
  • Life Skills Groups (Stress Management, Anger Management, Self-esteem and Assertiveness Training)
  • Body Image Group
  • Family Education

A referral from a family physician is required. Assessments of patients are prioritized according to the severity of individual medical and psychological difficulties. The program is voluntary and patients are expected to take an active role in their treatment.

The Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders Service provides treatment in either a day treatment or out-patient setting.

Adolescent Day Treatment Service - This service is a group-based, milieu treatment program for adolescents aged 12-18 years. The day treatment setting can accommodate 6 participants at a time.

Participants attend five days a week, and return home for evenings and weekends. The service offers nutritional rehabilitation, academic studies on site, several therapeutic groups and family therapy. The treatment day typically consists of meal support and school, as well as a variety of treatment groups such as:

  • Self Discovery
  • Creative Arts/Music Group
  • Body Image
  • Power Within
  • Recreation Group
  • Nutrition Group
  • Food Experience

Family involvement is seen to be a key component of the program. Families are encouraged to participate and may attend the psycho-educational Module of “Why Weight” parent support groups, family therapy sessions, discharge and progress meetings, and other planning and contact, as needed.

Child and Adolescent Outpatient Services - This service offers individual psychotherapy, family based therapy and nutritional counseling, including:

  • Parent Support Group, designed to help family members understand and cope with an eating disorder, share strategies and provide mutual support
  • “Why Weight”
  • Psycho-educational group, designed to support clients and their parents or caregivers by educating them on the process of change and eating disorders

The role of Disordered Eating Program Specialist is to:

  • facilitate linkages between programming to facilitate transitions in treatment
  • provide individuals and families with information supports across the continuum about family support groups that are connected with the child and adolescent and adult eating disorders programs offered by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
  • participate in planning strategies related to health promotion and prevention around disordered eating.
  • provide consultation to services providers in the community.
  • educate and raise awareness through media literacy, etc. for professionals and the community.

The Committee on Disordered Eating (CODE) is a Winnipeg-based network for regional eating disorders/disordered eating services, service providers and professionals. CODE is comprised of service providers, family members and individuals affected by eating disorders. CODE’s role includes:

  • collaborating, networking and exchanging information between stakeholders
  • identifying best practices across the spectrum of eating disorders / disordered eating.
  • involvement in public education and awareness around disordered eating and eating disorders, and
  • participating in health promotion / prevention strategies that increase protective factors, promote a healthy body image among all age groups, educate the media, media literacy, build on community strengths, resources and relationships.

While Klinic does not offer specific therapeutic programs in the area of eating disorders, they are available to provide support, information, and referrals to other resources.  The following is a description of some of the programs Klinic offers.

Klinic Community Health Centre provides a range of health related services from primary health care to counseling to education.

Practitioners of the health services program include community nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners,social workers, community workers and dieticians who work together to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care. Patients of the health services program are selected based on geographical catchment and level of need. Klinic also runs a weekly teen clinic which is open to any teen until the age of 21.

Counseling services include a Post Trauma Program, Sexual Assault Program, Domestic Abuse Program, Crisis counseling and a Community Drop-In Counseling program.

The Teen Talk program provides workshops and peer support training to youth aged 14-19 in the area of mental health and body image.

Teen Talk is a youth health education service that delivers workshops to youth aged 13 - 19 in the areas of communication skills, teen dating violence, birth control, STI/HIV prevention, appreciating diversity, mental health issues, and body image. Teen Talk also runs a 38-hour peer support training program which offers youth an opportunity to be agents for change in their schools and communities.

Both the Workshops for Youth program and the Peer Support program are delivered in Winnipeg as well as rural and northern areas. Teen Talk works with more than 10, 000 youth per year and has a focus on meeting the varying needs of youth.

Teen Talk believes in providing accurate, non-judgmental health education with a focus on self-esteem building and the utilization of harm-reduction practices.

Women's Health Clinic (WHC) has been working in the area of weight preoccupation for 20 years. WHC works with women along the continuum from poor body image to a diagnosed eating disorder.

WHC offers:

  • professional Counseling services to adult and teen women –for free or low-cost
  • free nutritional Counseling by a dietitian, as well as professional eating disorder prevention training
  • weight preoccupation support group - offered two times per year to adult women
  • consultation with physicians and nurse practitioners regarding health concerns related to eating disorders
  • community education for grades 4-S4 and adult women on weight preoccupation/body image and self-esteem
  • information packages on Eating Disorders and Health At Every Size mailed to anywhere in the province
  • classroom education for grades 1-3 on body-image and healthy bodies.

Brandon

This service accepts referrals for residents experiencing mental and emotional health problems and can be made by the individual, their physician, a friend or a family member. The treatment team includes Psychiatry, Psychology, and Community Mental Health Workers. Community mental health workers are trained in Psychiatric Nursing and/or Social Work, and provide individualized treatment planning and supportive Counseling to clients.

Clients from age 18 to 64 are seen on an appointment basis. Scheduling varies and is arranged between therapists (Community Mental Health Workers) and clients. Walk-in services are also provided during regular office hours, and after-hours services are provided by Mobile Crisis Services.

Services provided include: assessment, referral, and short- or long-term individual Counseling.

The Centre for Adult Psychiatry delivers acute, comprehensive inpatient psychiatric treatment to adults age 18 to 64. The treatment team is multidisciplinary and includes Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Pharmacy, Psychiatric Nursing, and Pastoral Care.

Inpatient Services provides 24-hour care in a 25-bed unit located within Brandon Regional Health Centre. Services at CAP are provided to adults experiencing psychosocial crisis or psychiatric illness, including eating disorders.

These services include: multidisciplinary assessment, individualized treatment planning, and provision of information and support to patients and their families. Treatment may include individual, group and family therapy, medical interventions, self-development programs, life skills training, and recreation.

A general physician is available to provide medical evaluation of all patients and order blood work or other tests necessary to access and monitor the patient’s physical health status. Referral/consultation with the hospital dietician is provided to patients with eating disorders to facilitate nutritional rehabilitation and assist with health meal planning. Eating disorder patients may benefit from the structure provided in an inpatient setting as well as emotional support and Counseling from staff.

Referral to Adult Community Mental Health or other relevant community-based agencies is provided as needed to assist patients with community transition post-discharge.

Child & Adolescent Treatment Centre

The Child and Adolescent Treatment Centre provides services to children and adolescents 10 to 17 years of age with mental health diagnoses, including eating disorders. The treatment team is multidisciplinary and includes psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, registered psychiatric nurses, registered nurses, teachers and occupational therapists.

Day Treatment:

  • Clients attend daily Monday to Friday.
  • Services provided include: assessment, individualized planning, community transition and consultation, and family support.
  • Treatment is provided through individual and group therapies focusing on self-esteem, social skills, communication skills, anger management, leisure and skills development.

Inpatient Treatment:

  • Inpatient Services provides 24 hour care in a 10-bed unit.

Community Mental Health Services:

Mobile Crisis Services (MCU) / Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU)

MCU/CSU services include assessment, referral, and/or short-term admission to the Crisis Stabilization Unit, a 10-bed unit located in a community setting. Admission to the CSU is voluntary and can provide clients in psychosocial crisis with a place to stay for a brief period of time. It is staffed (24 hours a day) by Registered Psychiatric Nurses, and also has access to psychiatry services. Assessment, referral and short-term Counseling are provided.

Mobile Crisis Services provides 24-hour access to mental health services. The crisis line is staffed by Registered Psychiatric Nurses based at CSU. MCU staff may arrange to meet a client at their home or other location and provide transportation to CSU or the Brandon Regional Health Centre if necessary.

Note: CSU is unable to provide service to clients who are acutely suicidal and unable to contract for safety. (Clients who are acutely suicidal are admitted to the Centre for Adult Psychiatry through the ER at Brandon Regional Health Centre).

Westwind Eating Disorder Recovery Centre is a private (fee-for-service) treatment centre offering an intensive residential treatment program for individuals with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and related eating disorders

Treatment at Westwind is collaborative and individualized, and consists of daily individual sessions as well as group sessions and uses a problem solving/skill building model to identify a client’s strengths and build on them. Issues addressed include:

  • self-worth
  • problem solving/coping skills development
  • nutrition education
  • awareness of biological/medical consequences
  • body image and attitudes toward weight and shape
  • appropriate exercise
  • stress management
  • relationship/family dynamics
  • weight controlling behaviours such as dieting and purging

The program is a 12-hour a day treatment program, including all meals and snacks.

The program partners with family physicians in the community for medical monitoring. While the program is residential and most clients stay at the centre seven days a week, structured programming is offered five days a week.

Services offered by South Eastman in the area of eating disorder treatment and prevention include:

  • the availability of the Child and Adolescent Community Mental Health Team for school presentations that focus on media awareness and promoting healthy body image and self-esteem
  • the availability of Community Mental Health Services to provide presentations, open to community members, on eating disorders
  • the availability of a faith based support group for women with eating disorders that meets once a month

Employee Assistance Programs

Many employers have Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) for use by employees and their family members. EAPs can provide a wide range of professional Counseling services and other specialized services for personal, marital and family, or work related concerns provided by a range of professionals (social work, marriage and family therapy, nursing psychiatric nursing). EAP services are:

  • voluntary;
  • province-wide; and
  • free of charge to users .
