Identity Theft

What is identity theft?

Identity theft happens when someone uses your personal information to impersonate you. Consequences are serious for both consumers and businesses.

If a thief uses your personal information to obtain credit, social benefits or official documents like a birth certificate or driver’s licence, that thief could also steal your money or property and affect your credit rating. You could even be arrested for a crime you didn’t commit. It may cost you considerable time and money to set records straight.

A business considered liable in the theft of a customer’s personal information may suffer financial losses resulting from a ruined reputation, lost customers and damage claims by theft victims.
