Welcoming the World - Welcoming You

International Study

Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience. It is an opportunity to learn about the cultures and countries you visit as well as yourself. By spending time in the daily life of another culture you experience that society from the perspective of the “other."

There are a number of ways to study abroad:
Non-Institutional/School-Based Program - An interested student researches, identifies and organizes a potential program overseas. Some programs may be supported by foundations or private organizations such as Rotary International.

For further information please check out the Resources and Link page

Institutional/School-Based Programs

  • Independent Programs – An interested student researches and identifies a potential program overseas and then develops a study plan, usually in consultation with a teacher or professor.
  • Exchange programs – Selected students from the home institution study at a partner institution, while students from the partner institution come to study at the home institution. Exchange programs are usually supported by formal international agreements.
  • Field school programs – A formal course that is delivered abroad by a teacher/faculty member, often involving a group of students from the same school/institution.

If you are interested in institution/school based options check with the International Education Office at your institution for information on the availability of such programs and the criteria and procedures for participation.

Provincial Agreements – Manitoba has entered into education-related agreements with other governments. These agreements are overseen by the Government of Manitoba, but administered by local educational institutions.

  • German Exchange Program - In October 2003, the Government of Manitoba entered into this agreement with the city-state of Hamburg and the state of Lower Saxony. This agreement formalizes exchanges between Manitoba and Germany that have been active for the last three decades. Click on the following link to learn more about the exchange:
  • Reciprocity Program with the State of Minnesota – Manitoba has a long-standing agreement with the state of Minnesota which provides for equal treatment of students at post-secondary institutions. Manitobans studying at Minnesota’s public universities and colleges are charged the same tuition fees as Minnesota residents and vice versa. Click here to learn more.

Note: The transfer of credits to your home institution for courses taken overseas, through the range of programs outlined above, is not necessarily guaranteed. It is the participating student's responsibility to find out if credit transfer is possible.
