Key Information
- Location: Brandon University is located in the heart of Canada. Geographically, Brandon, a city of 42,000, is located in the western part of Manitoba, one hour north of the Canada-United States border. Brandon is a dynamic community which serves a rich agricultural and farming region. It is a very beautiful city, dotted with lots of parks, many along the Assiniboine River that winds its way through the valley. Brandon delivers excellent social, cultural and sporting opportunities - many available at Brandon University itself. The Centennial auditorium is located on the campus and our own School of Music organizes an extensive and varied program of events. Brandon has film, jazz and folk festivals, and the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair is a major attraction you should not miss. The Keystone Centre hosts local, provincial, national and international sporting events, as well as musical and cultural events. Brandon is a city of just the right proportion: big enough to offer all the benefits of city life, but small enough to remain warm and friendly.
- Accommodation Options: Homestay (for English language students); Campus Residence; and Private Housing
- Health Insurance Requirement: The health insurance plan provided by Brandon University is mandatory for all international students. The plan covers students from September 1 to August 31 annually but it can be started or terminated on the first of any month. Basic coverage is provided, similar to that offered to Manitoba residents through Manitoba Health.
- Student Population: Brandon University has 3297 students in 2008-09. Of these,
116 are international students. In addition, 57 international students are studying in the
fall term of our English for Academic Purposes program (EAP) on-campus; 33 studied in our spring/summer
term, and aproximately 40 students are studying in our off-shore program in PR China.
- Study Periods: Fall term begins the first week of September; winter term begins the first week of January. As well, there is a spring/summer intake for the EAP program that begins the last week of April.
Institutional Profile
There are a number of things about Brandon University that make a student's experience unlike the undergraduate experience at any other university, regardless of the field of study. We offer unique programs, great study facilities, free interlibrary loans, a safe and affordable environment, accessible student services, and classes taught by real professors. What really stands out for everyone and makes the quality of the educational experience at Brandon University unrivalled are:
- We have a low student-professor ratio - class size does make a difference to academic success and enjoyment. There are just 11 students for every professor. Sixty percent of our classes have fewer than 20 students.
- We focus on undergraduate education; students are more likely to enjoy the time and attention that only graduate research students receive elsewhere.
- Brandon is an ideal community - the warmth and friendliness of the city permeates the campus: students are people at Brandon University.
Brandon University's unique/notable course offerings:
- School of Music is rated as one of the best in Canada.

- The Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies degree addresses the need for well-qualified people working in this field through a novel, highly interactive, problem-solving curriculum.
- Our new Bachelor of Fine Arts is a professional studio-based program offering four-year majors and minors in Aboriginal art, ceramics, digital media and design, and painting.
- Our Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science program addresses environmental issues from a broad perspective; awareness of environmental issues facing society will go together with a firm foundation in physical, life, and social sciences.
