2014 International Student of the Year Awards

The International Education Branch of the Government of Manitoba and the Manitoba Council for International Education are proud to announce the following recipients of the 2014 International Student of the Year Awards:

  1. Secondary sector – Anna Dorosenkova (Slovakia) from River East Transcona School Division
  2. Post-secondary sector – Andy Thong Quoc Pham (Vietnam) from Red River College
  3. Language program sector – Ting Ting Shi (China) from Red River College

Secondary sector:

Anna Dorosenkova is from the River East Transcona School Division in Winnipeg. Anna is currently finishing Grade 11 at Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau where she studies all of her courses in French – while also living with an English-speaking homestay family.

Anna, who arrived in September 2013 from Slovakia, has an overall average of 86% while taking a full course load this year. She received the highest marks in her class for the courses “Animation 2D” and “Modelisation 3D” and an award for her French-speaking skills. She has been an active member of the UNESCO committee at Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau and participated in several fundraising activities.

Anna also played on the school basketball, badminton and soccer teams and participated in a number of intramural sports.

Post-Secondary sector:

Andy Thong Quoc Pham is from Red River College in Winnipeg. Andy started as a language student in the Language Training Centre at Red River in 2013 after arriving from Vietnam. In August of 2013 he began the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program at Red River College and quickly became involved in many aspects of student life.

Andy has maintained a GPA above 4.1 so far in his studies. He participated in the Ally Training of the LGBTT* initiative at Red River and volunteered as a Global mentor in the Cultural and Language Mentor Program.

Andy is extremely involved in RRC community life, including volunteering as a class representative with the Red River College Students’ Association and overcoming challenges to successfully launch an “LGBTT* and Friends Club” on campus.

Language Programs sector:

Ting Ting Shi (Rae) is from Red River College in Winnipeg. Rae hails from China and graduated from the Red River College Language Training Centre (LTC) in April of 2014. In May, she began her academic studies in the International Business Program at Red River.

While at LTC, Rae excelled in her studies, always trying to improve herself and open to receiving constructive criticism from her instructors. She participated in both class and college events and even took it upon herself to organize potlucks and other activities for her fellow students.

The International Student of the Year Awards are awarded annually to recognize the contributions of international students to the Manitoba community. Students receive a monetary prize of $200 and a certificate signed by the Minister of Education and Advanced Learning.
