My experience as a student in Canada has been fantastic. I came to Winnipeg, Manitoba knowing nothing about the city and its people. The multiculturalism, the landscapes and overall the Prairie sky is overwhelming. I started a masters program in Civil Engineering in June 2004 and when I finished in 2006, I was invited to study a doctorate, which I accepted with pleasure. My English has improved 100% and Winnipeg has allowed me to travel the five continents without having to leave the city, where I have shared with people from Afghanistan, Cameroon, India, China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic, and other countries as well. I still am amazed that a city of no more than 800,000 people can be so international. More than just feeling like a Chilean, I feel like a person who belongs to a globalized world, without borders and without nationality, and happy to be so. The University of Manitoba enjoys good prestige and is considered one of the best in Canada, where you can explore different sciences in the same campus. Living in Winnipeg has been a fabulous experience, especially for its contrasts and how friendly the people are. The weather is pretty rigorous and the temperature can fluctuate easily with a 60-degree difference, which gives you incentive to participate in winter sports and activities. Furthermore, I have participated in the racquetball and soccer leagues of Manitoba.
