Health Insurance Requirement: Health insurance is required through Manitoba International Student Health Insurance Plan (MISHIP)

Student Population: Students of the English Language Centre come from a wide variety of countries and backgrounds, with the majority coming from China, South Korea and Japan. Last year, over 350 students enjoyed the benefits of our trained and experienced instructors before continuing their academic pursuits.

Study Periods: The English Language Centre's Full-Time Programs operate on a 3-term academic calendar, with start dates in September, January, and May. Each term is 15 weeks long with a one-week break, and 23 hours of instruction per week.

  • The English Language Centre offers students academic English courses and programs to prepare them for university study, as well as assistance to students already in academic study at the University of Manitoba.
  • Mission Statement: The English Language Centre enhances success for students, as well as potential students whose first language is not English by providing courses, tests, Homestay, and individual support in order that they may achieve their academic goals and participate with confidence in the University of Manitoba community.
  • Student Life activities, including bowling, sporting events, and field trips to various points of interest in Manitoba.
  • The English Language Centre offers over $9500 in bursaries in scholarships annually to assist our students who demonstrate financial need and/or high academic achievement.
  • Class sizes of roughly 10-14 students.

Program Details

  • The English Language Centre offers a full-time Intensive Academic English Program with five levels of study. Level 5 (known as AEPUCE or Academic English Program for University and College Entrance), is a bridge program. Graduates of Level 5 automatically meet the English language requirements of the University of Manitoba. (www.umanitoba.ca/elc/fulltime).
  • The English Language Centre also offers part-time English for Academic Purposes (EAP courses, available to post-secondary non-native English speakers and professionals in the community who wish to improve their language skills. (www.umanitoba.ca/elc/parttime).

Tuition and Fees

  • Full Time IAEP/AEPUCE Fees:
    • ELC Application Fee - $85  ($90 as of May 2009)
    • Tuition (per 14-week term of instruction) - $3000
    • Health Insurance (per term) - $152
  • Part Time EAP Fees:
    • Tuition (per 30-hour term) - $180-$195.
