Institutional Profile

The University of Winnipeg Collegiate was opened in 1873 under the name of Wesley College. Through its years as United College and now in its present status as an independent school and a division of The University of Winnipeg, the Collegiate has maintained its unique character and has hosted generations of innovative and passionate students. The University of Winnipeg Collegiate tradition is one of academic excellence and accessibility.

The Collegiate is committed to offering grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 students high school programs that provide a transition to post-secondary education. Between 50 and 100 international students, annually attend the University of Winnipeg Collegiate to prepare for university in Canada or in their home country.

We are very proud of the accomplishments of our graduates. On an annual basis, over 85% of our graduating class directly enters universities across Canada and around the world. Because we are a division of the University of Winnipeg, our graduates benefit from our seamless admission process into the university and from the scholarship program available to international students at the University of Winnipeg.

Program Details

We have a unique program designed for our international students that combines segregated language and social studies instruction, when necessary, with integrated academic instruction.

Upon registration, international students complete an English Language Assessment. The results are used to select the program of study that would be best for each student. If the English Language skills require a great deal of improvement, the student will be timetabled into two segregated language arts sections (or one language arts and one social studies course for grade 10 and 11 students). The student will also be timetabled into integrated academic courses (mathematics, chemistry, physics etc) that are required to meet university entrance requirements. If the student's English Language skills are strong, the student will be timetabled into English classes with our domestic students.

Every student that registers at the Collegiate works with a dean, or a registrar, to develop a program of studies that will satisfy the university entrance requirements.

Instead of offering an AP or IP program, we offer qualified students the opportunity to take first year university courses for dual credit. This means that upon successful completion, students earn university and high school credit for the course work.
