Mobility Disadvantaged Transportation Program Regional Incentive Grant

A new Regional Incentive Grant component of the Province’s Mobility Disadvantaged Transportation Program (MDTP) was established in 2011/12, to provide additional operating support to address the challenges of delivering handi-transit service on a regional basis.

This program has recently been expanded by revising the eligibility criteria, to enable even more communities that deliver regional handi-transit service to be eligible for this funding. These changes will benefit handi-transit service providers that have seen steady demand for their service in recent years and have the potential to expand service to nearby communities.

Regional Incentive Grant funding is based on a formula that recognizes handi-transit service delivery volumes, including the number of trips provided and kilometres driven each year. Grants will be calculated based on the current year’s handi-transit service operating data and financial information and paid to eligible municipalities by March 31st each year. Regional Incentive Grant funding is in addition to the Province’s annual MDTP Operating Grant that is currently provided to 69 handi-transit communities.

Funding support through this program is available to eligible handi-transit service providers meeting all of the following criteria:

  • provide a regional handi-transit service to 2 or more communities;
  • serve a minimum combined population base of 5,000;
  • receive a minimum 20% of operating revenues from participating municipalities;
  • receive the maximum or receive within $5,000 of the maximum MDTP operating grant applicable to the service; and,
  • comply with all of the terms and conditions of the MDTP program.
